In its international Edition ... SCCA Arabic Moot Attracts 84 Teams From 14 Countries

The Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration announces that 84 teams have joined the third edition of the Arabic Moot in Commercial Arbitration, which for the first time this year was open to competitors anywhere in the world. Students from law and Sharia schools from around the world will come together to compete, in Arabic, in a hypothetical dispute that simulates a real-world international commercial arbitration case.

The competing universities are spread across 43 cities in 14 countries. They include foreign universities such as the University of Cambridge, Brunel University London, International Islamic University Malaysia, and 33 universities from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

In this year’s edition, each of the 84 teams – which comprise 444 students and 142 supervisors altogether – will take a turn playing the roles of both the Claimant and the Respondent by submitting written briefs and presenting oral arguments in a hypothetical arbitration case before top international arbitrators. Thus, the competition reinforces the practical dimension of the academic instruction that students receive in their university studies.

The SCCA Arabic Moot is being held in partnership with major international institutions involved advancing the commercial arbitration industry globally, such as the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the Commercial Law Development Program at the U.S. Department of Commerce (CLDP), and the UK’s Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).

The competing teams will have a chance to win several prizes at the end of the competition, including scholarships offered by the competition to study for a Master of Laws degree at the University of East Anglia or International Islamic University Malaysia, or to receive training through the SCCA-CIArb International Fellowship in Commercial Arbitration.

The Arabic Moot reflects the SCCA’s role in promoting a culture of Arabic-language commercial arbitration within the legal community – locally, regionally and internationally. Through the competition, the SCCA gives Sharia and law students a solid foundation in institutional arbitration practices consistent with the international standards and best practices.

The third edition of the competition is expected to go through several time-bound stages, including the Claimant memorandum submission deadline on 23 December 2021, the Respondent memorandum submission deadline on 17 February 2022, and the start of oral arguments on 13 May 2022.
